Do I need an app?+
No, Snapfile works entirely through WhatsApp. No app to download, no new software to learn.
Who is Snapfile for?+
UK sole traders, freelancers, landlords. Perfect for electricians, plumbers, cleaners, tutors, delivery drivers, photographers, and any self-employed person.
How does VAT extraction work?+
Our AI reads receipts and extracts vendor, date, total, and VAT. For typed expenses without VAT, we calculate it at 20%.
Is my data private and secure?+
Yes. Data is encrypted in transit via WhatsApp, stored securely in the UK, never shared with third parties, and fully GDPR compliant.
Is there a free plan?+
Yes, free forever. 5 scans and 10 WhatsApp messages per month. Great way to try before upgrading.
Does Snapfile need HMRC approval?+
Free and Lite plans are personal trackers with no HMRC submission, so they don't need regulatory approval. Pro plan is going through HMRC's Making Tax Digital approval process.
Is Snapfile a replacement for an accountant?+
No. Snapfile helps you keep accurate records, which makes your accountant's job much easier and faster. We always recommend consulting a qualified accountant for tax advice.
Is Snapfile working towards MTD support?+
Snapfile is an expense tracker that keeps your income and expense records in digital format. We are working towards Making Tax Digital support — our Pro plan will handle quarterly submissions to HMRC once we receive HMRC approval. In the meantime, Snapfile helps you keep organised digital records.
What is Making Tax Digital and do I need MTD software?+
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC's initiative to digitise the UK tax system. From April 2026, sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000 must use MTD compatible software to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates. From April 2027, the threshold drops to £30,000. Snapfile helps you keep organised digital records — just snap receipts on WhatsApp.
Can Snapfile submit my quarterly MTD returns to HMRC?+
Not yet. Our Pro plan, which will include quarterly submissions to HMRC, is currently going through HMRC's approval process. In the meantime, Snapfile keeps your digital records organised and generates quarterly reports you can use.
How is Snapfile different from other expense trackers?+
Most expense trackers require you to learn complex accounting dashboards. Snapfile works entirely on WhatsApp — just snap a receipt or type an expense. No apps to download, no software to learn, no accounting knowledge needed. It's the simplest expense tracker available.
